Design of Piezocomposite Transducers

Composite transducers are made of active piezoelectric ceramic rodes or plates imbeded in nonpiezoelectric polymer. The most popular structure is the so called 1-3 composite. Such design can fully take advantage of both constituents to produce a broad band transducer with high electromechanical coupling coefficient.

Transducer designs involve the study of dynamical behavior of composite transducer, the calculation of the acoustic beam patterns and the understanding on the element cross talking. These are practical topics and require the knowledge of Physics, Mathematics and Materials Science. They are challenging, interesting and important. The mathematical knowledge involved are: ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and numerical analysis. One could fully simulate the vibrational characteristics of a composite transducer using finite element method.
